Kram Welcomes Return of YQR's International Status

Regina-Wascana MP Michael Kram today welcomed the announcement by Transport Canada that the Regina Airport would once again be classified as an international airport.

“The official designation of an airport as ‘international’ is, in some ways, symbolic but it is an important symbol. It represents a positive outcome for the long and difficult journey we, as a community, have been through with the airport through the pandemic.”

“The airport had to survive plummeting usership and revenues with minimal support from the federal government. We faced the threatened closure of the air traffic control tower. Then, just to add insult to injury, the airport was stripped of its international status. Then as now, it seemed as though the federal Liberal government was actively discouraging Canadians from travelling.”

“But now, we have turned that all around. The airport’s revenues have returned to roughly pre-pandemic levels. Working together as a community, we forced Nav Canada to reverse its decision about the control tower. More direct and international flights are returning to the airport. And now, as the icing on the cake, we are again recognized as a full and proper international airport.”

Kram said that the process of rebuilding the airport’s fortunes was a collective effort.

“This is truly an accomplishment by the whole community. While the federal government was of no help, every other level of government and politics – including provincial, municipal and Opposition MPs – did their part. Likewise, the whole population of Regina deserves credit. Whether you booked a trip or signed a petition, you made a difference and made a contribution to preserving and restoring the success of the airport.”

“Last but not least, we can’t overlook the dedicated efforts of YQR CEO James Bogusz and his staff. Throughout all the hardships, they stayed positive and kept of the fight. Their dedication to their community is commendable.”
